A Laborious Labor Day
September 7, 2026
Labor Day is supposed to be hammocks and grills. Our whiteboard had exactly one item on it. The day then spent itself on everything except that item — and earned its title the hard way.
The plan
One job: get the new Echo Show 5 (3rd gen) set up, on the network, and reachable by SuperClaw, so the ha-mac-orchestration project could finally leave the runway. The end state hasn't changed: Home Assistant on the Mac mini as the single orchestration layer, Alexa staying voice-only, the Echo as the voice-and-display endpoint for the fleet, and IFTTT's remaining applets retired once they're migrated.
Buried in the setup was the day's first discovery: Amazon only allows the apostrophe as a special character in Alexa device names — no spaces, no dashes, none of the usual naming conventions. So the Echo got a plain, voice-friendly word instead: Kadukeusu. Simple beats clever when a speech recognizer is the interface.
The gravity well of "while we're here"
- Daemons down. The handshake daemon had stopped answering; restart, verify the port, back in business. While we were in there, the print-cam and Shelly state daemons got relaunched and the day's command queue archived off for a clean slate.
- The local LLM experiment. Part of the day ran with SuperClaw pointed at a local model — LM Studio serving Gemma 4. We tried; it failed to pick up the ball: project references gone, barely any interrogation of the workspace to figure out what was being asked. The SuperClaw box got rebooted and we reverted to the cloud backend. The session database backup made beforehand turned out to be the day's smartest move.
- Stale model references. OpenRouter API calls threw errors over a model reference that no longer existed; scrubbing the sessions cleared the error.
- Print-cam recalibration. The print camera had drifted; fresh reference frames in, calibration rewritten, and its "print complete" verdicts are trustworthy again.
- Sun-project recalibration. Same story, different instrument: the measurement rig drifted and needed recalibrating before the numbers meant anything again.
- Widget updates. The OpenRouter history widget got a refreshed fetch script, the sun widget got its own refresh tooling, and the print-power widget (fed by the Shelly plug tracker) got updates on the homepage.
- Slack bridge recovery. The Slack bridge got a clean-restart script and a watchdog pass, plus a first attempt at a /resume command — which is still chasing accurate session listings.
- socat recovery. The WSL2 relay hop in the Mac → Windows → WSL2 → container path fell over and got nursed back up. The whole remote chain is only as strong as its laziest hop.
- The various other tweaks. There is always one more screw.
Where we landed
The Echo Show 5 is sitting on the desk — not even plugged in yet — with its configuration in-flight, and the orchestration goal is untouched. Meanwhile, everything that work depends on — daemons, relays, cameras, calibrations, widgets — got a forced maintenance day it probably needed. Not the day the whiteboard promised. But the ground the project stands on is standing straighter for it.
Laborious? Deeply. Fitting for Labor Day? Entirely.
